Asking and listening for the answer to the question of RU OK brings light into lives. Where we pause to ask and listen, we provide space to engage in conversation that can encourage and support. Pausing and the listening builds connections and can strengthen relationships. Having someone really listen can make a huge difference. On this day of national action for R U OK we are reminded that every day we can make a difference by checking in with people and being attentive to their response. Where we find there is a greater need, we can engage with professional support through counsellors such as Mr Brendan Macauley at the College, GPs and through a variety of agencies including Beyond Blue, Kids Helpline, and Headspace.

Through being an encouraging presence and through prayer we can pray that God would equip and guide us to be people who can walk with and shine a light of hope. God promises that He will always listen and walk with us through all circumstances.

As we come to the close of a term there is always much to celebrate. Both the Pacific FC and Club PLC Netball have successfully completed their seasons. We are very appreciative of the parents and volunteers who have contributed to the season and enabled our students to have the great experience of playing football and netball in well organised clubs. We thank all coaches, managers, volunteers and executive members for providing rich opportunities for growth, connection and enjoyment. A particular thank you to Mrs Donna Watkins who has very capably led Club PLC Netball as Club President and to Mrs Rita Williams and Mrs Jenny Lee for their leadership of Pacific FC. All three women have been very generous with their time over many years and contributed to the growth of strong clubs.  Both clubs can be proud of their contribution to the lives of young people and this community.

It was a delight to watch the Division 1 and Division 4 Netball Grand Finals on Saturday.  Both teams played tightly contested matches with great skill and sportsmanship and can be proud of their wins. Congratulations to all girls and to coach Mrs Michelle Dufty. We thank Michelle for the significant role she is playing in the growth of netball through both school and club netball in her role as Head of Netball. Thank you to the many parents, friends, staff and students who supported the girls on Saturday.

Many of us were inspired as we reflected on the art and film pieces that were exhibited at the Art and Film Night last week. The works displayed high levels of creative talent and promoted a variety of emotional responses and reflection. The exhibition included a number of very thought provoking pieces that included commentary on contemporary issues and life perspectives. A particular thank you and congratulations to the Cultural Pacific Action Group Captains, Mitchell and Ayrisa for their organisation and the students who assisted in the running of the evening and to our talented Visual Art & Film staff team of Miss Elise Black, Mrs Marnie Whittaker, Mrs Lara Masselos and Mrs Rowena Marshall. Thank you to parents, staff and students for their support of the evening and to all staff involved in the set up and running of the exhibition.

A large number of middle college students have been engaged in important thinking as part of this year's Future Problem Solving Competition. Rich growth has occurred as they have generated reflections and solutions for future global, national and local issues. All students are to be congratulated on their thinking and commitment to imagine, plan and act for a better future. We particularly congratulate Amy, Isla, Evie, Lara, Madeline, Zara, Evie, Sophia, Macey, Georgia, Anita, Jessica, Kiarah, and Evie on their invitation to represent Queensland at the National Finals in Melbourne later this year. We thank Mrs Jo Belchamber, Mrs Linda Sydes, Mr Rob Belchamber, Mrs Adelle Byerlee, and past student Makani Campbell for their leadership of these individuals and these teams.

Our Rugby girls performed well in the Rugby 10 aside competition with the Division 2 U14 Gold team reaching the semi-finals and our U14 Blue team reaching the Division 1 Grand Final. We congratulate all of the rugby players who participated in the Rugby 10s competition this term and thank coaches, managers, staff, students, parents for their leadership and support. A particular thank you to Mr Josh Cummins for his leadership as Head of Rugby. Well done to our Senior Boys 2nds Basketball Team who won their division grand final last Friday. Congratulations to all players and thank you to coach Mr Mark Hauser.

Our Senior students learnt a great deal as they engaged in the Sleep Out For the Homeless last Friday night. We thank Mrs Antionette Lloyd from Youturn for supporting our Senior students and providing them with a real life opportunity to reflect on and experience the needs of the vulnerable in our local and wider communities. Youturn is a charity which started over 30 years ago to address and support youth homelessness in the Sunshine Coast. They have supported over 16 000 people since they began https://youturn.org.au/who-we-are/.

At the end of this term we farewell Mrs Trish Barone who will be taking long service leave through Term 4 and then moving into the next phase of life. Mrs Barone has very capably supported the learning of Middle and Senior College Maths students at Pacific and within a variety of schools as a teacher including a role as Head of Mathematics. We express our appreciation for the very positive impact Mrs Barone has had on the learning of our students and celebrate the positive influence that she has had on the lives of students throughout her career. We also farewell and thank Ms Sarah Tolhurst who is returning to South Australia. Many students have appreciated Ms Tolhurst’s care and support as a Middle and Senior College Christian Studies, English and Humanities and pastoral care group teacher. We thank Mrs Emily Chester for capably fulfilling Ms Alice Boyd’s role as a Physical Education teacher this term. We wish Mrs Barone, Ms Tolhurst and Mrs Chester all the best for their futures. We wish English, HPE and Humanities teacher, Mr Duncan McNee all the best for his long service leave in Term 4. Next term we look forward to welcoming Mr Jack Best (Mathematics and Science), Dr Ryan Delaney (English and Humanities) and Mrs Tammy Schincariol (English and Humanities).

We pray that God would equip us to listen well to each other. We pray for all those who face challenges, and that God would provide for their needs.

The end of another school term comes. Often, this time of year comes with a mixture of tiredness and excitement. Staff, students, and parents all look forward to a break, but also want to finish strong. It is in these moments where we learn valuable lessons about what it means to truly live a life that reflects God’s love and wisdom.

Over the past few weeks in chapels, we’ve explored the theme of ‘restraint,’ and also highlighted the important role that humility plays in this as well. These may not always be the most celebrated qualities in our culture, which often focuses on being the "Greatest of All Time" (GOAT) in whatever we do—whether it’s in academics, sports, or popularity. But Jesus gives us a different perspective. When the disciples argued about who among them was the greatest, Jesus surprised them by saying, “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves” (Luke 22:26).

In a world that often encourages us to push ahead, to be first, or to be the best, Jesus invites us to think differently. Greatness, according to Jesus, isn’t about being at the top, it’s about service. It’s about putting others first and ourselves second. Imagine a school community where everyone, rather than competing to be the best, sought to lift each other up, to encourage rather than envy, and to serve rather than be served. That would truly reflect what Jesus meant by being "the greatest."

It takes restraint and strength to be able to hold back when it would be easier to lash out. It takes wisdom to choose words that build others up rather than tear them down. Our words have the power to bring life or harm, and we are called to use them with love, care, and purpose. Just as Jesus chose restraint and spoke words of life, we too can use our voices to encourage, comfort, and bring hope to those around us.

As we approach the holidays, let’s remember that God’s love for us is unconditional. It doesn’t depend on our achievements, successes, or failures. No matter where we find ourselves at the end of this term—whether feeling accomplished or in need of grace—God’s love remains constant. This is a love that is not earned by being the "greatest" but given freely to each of us.

And that’s the greatest gift we can ever receive.

Leading by Example

In the development of the Pacific Way years ago, it was decided that we required a symbol that embodied the inherent nature of what we were trying to achieve by guiding our students on their journey.

It was decided that a lighthouse captured this vision perfectly. A light that shone the way whilst acknowledging the possibility of what lies beneath.

This week at assembly, we revisited this idea with the specific link of leading by example. All of us, in our words, actions and thoughts, have the capacity to lead by example and know that small actions can lead to big consequences. This was exemplified by a domino stack collapsing. One small push can impact all the dominos around. The one falling domino had consequences on those around it.

Traditionally, we may have thought of consequences as potentially negative. But when we stop and think, all actions have consequences. Some are applied by others, but most occur naturally. When we decide to impact our relationships negatively, we may have some adult involvement in the resolution, but mostly, it is naturally occurring consequences such as emotional and social harm and deep impact to relationships that do not require any external input. They just happen as a result.

However, the same applies when we lead by example in our learning and relationships. We feel good about ourselves; we make others feel good, and we grow our capacity to shine the light on others.

It is a privilege to witness this every day at the college. Small actions by students and staff, such as including others in a game, maintaining the waste in the playground, and committing to our best in our learning and organisation, all set an example to others about what lifelong learning and growth entails and to be that lighthouse for others around us.

Kids in Action

Our Year 5 students were once again involved in this year's Kids in Action Conference at the Sunshine Coast University last week.  This conference is a partnership between the Sunshine Coast Council, Local Elders and First Nations Peoples and students across both the Sunshine and Noosa Councils. Kids in Action allows students to take the lead and build workshops and resources for other Sunshine Coast students to participate in. This year's theme was HEAR on Country; Are you listening? The conference provided a platform for students to address what they heard from others and proactively seek solutions that focused on the environment.

In response, the students developed a presentation that addressed the reasons for unkind behaviour and prejudiced remarks toward others, utilising an emotional regulation scale based on local animals. They also cleaned and packaged the nearly 20,000 plastic bottle caps collected by students across P-5 and have been working with Middle and Senior College staff to have them recycled into keyrings as a constant reminder of the role discarded plastics play in our environment.

Congratulations to all involved and a special thank you to Year 5 teacher, Mrs Luanne Pollard for her continued leadership in this area. We look forward to being a part of the Kids in Action again next year.

Applications are now open for the 2025 Sunshine Coast Health School Based Traineeship Program.

Local Sunshine Coast students, currently in Year 10, can apply now to start in February 2025.

Applications close on Tuesday 1 October 2024.

School Based Traineeships will be offered at the following Sunshine Coast Health locations:

• CALOUNDRA HEALTH SERVICE: Certificate III - Dental Assisting

• GYMPIE HOSPITAL: Certificate III - Allied Health Assistance

• NAMBOUR GENERAL HOSPITAL: Certificate III - Allied Health Assistance

• SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL: Certificate III - Allied Health Assistance

*Note: Initial applications will be assessed based on the student’s home location in relation to the selected facility.  Students should only select the traineeship at the facility within your school’s catchment area.

School Based Traineeships are open to;

• Current Year 10 students with the ability to commit to a 2-year school based traineeship across Year 11 and Year 12. Students need to have the skills, ability and self-motivation to work towards completing a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance or Certificate III in Dental Assisting prior to finishing school education and attend the workplace one day per week.

• Students with a genuine interest in Health – completing a school-based traineeship will allow students the opportunity to explore a pathway into a career in Health.

 Young Change Makers Program at UQ

Applications are now open for the Young ChangeMakers Program. The program is a 4-day experience that presents Year 11 students with an exciting opportunity for academic extension and enrichment, and is centred around igniting young change makers’ passions for leadership, academic achievement and community development in today’s global society.

Dates: This is a 4-day (3-night) stay at UQ’s St Lucia Campus (Sunday 24th November to Wednesday 27th November 2024).

Location: UQ, Brisbane St Lucia campus.

Cost: $520 includes all activities. Fee waivers and travel bursaries are available to assist students who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial circumstances.

As the holiday break approaches, it's a perfect time for families to reflect on the past term and celebrate their children's achievements. This pause in the school year offers a valuable opportunity for parents to engage in meaningful activities with their kids, fostering a sense of accomplishment and encouraging continued enthusiasm for learning.

Start by creating a special moment to discuss the term's highlights. Ask your children about their favourite subjects, proudest moments, and the challenges they faced. Celebrate their successes, no matter how big or small. This conversation not only acknowledges their hard work but also reinforces the value of perseverance and self-reflection.

Consider organising a fun family activity to mark the end of the term. This could be a movie night featuring a film related to their studies or interest areas, a themed dinner that reflects a project they completed, or a craft session where they can create something inspired by their recent lessons. Such activities not only make learning more memorable but also strengthen family bonds.

Additionally, take this time to set goals for the upcoming term. Discuss what they hope to achieve and how you can support them in reaching these goals. Setting a positive tone for the new term helps children return to school with renewed motivation and a clear sense of direction.

The Kids in Action program run by the Sunshine Coast Council, is about empowering young people who are passionate about the environment, to learn, grow and teach other students. The program is strongly supported by the local indigenous community who guide and mentor the program.  This year’s theme was, Hear on Country- Are you Listening? Over 18 schools participated and more than 250 students from Years 5-8, were engaged.

Our 2024 Kids in Action team of sixteen Year 5 students were exceptional in their ideas, passion and focus.  We split our energy and time between exploring Respectful Relationships with the concept of racism in mind and the environmental impact of plastics and how we could work to create a more sustainable use for our waste. Both projects are still works in progress. Further details about our Precious Plastics project, is described below

Introduced to the concept of Precious Plastics by Ms Marnie Whittaker, the students were hooked on designing a logo and figuring out a process to collect and reuse the appropriate plastics.  After discussions with Ms Beattie in Hospitality and Mr Learoyd in Technology, bottle caps were found to be the easiest, safest and most accessible item.

Inspired, the students ran a competition across the Junior Campus for Term 3. Each member of the team was in charge of a class, they collected, cleaned and counted bottle caps every Friday.  This Monday on assembly, the competition was greatly contested with the winners of each year level announced, before a final drum roll.  A whooping, 19 372 bottle caps were cleaned and counted, with 4E being the winners and recipients of a plastic keychain, made here at our school, using the bottle caps collected.

Pacific Lutheran College is currently the ONLY school on the Sunshine Coast and one of only three establishments that have a plastic shredder and press, on the Coast.  We would love to purchase a more advanced, mobile machine and continue to have a collection point for our bottle caps moving forward.

Mrs Luanne Pollard, Teacher - Year 5

This term Middle and Senior College students have enjoyed visiting our Early Childhood Centre during their Monday lunch break. The older students have been taking picture books into the Studio One Kindy room and reading to the 3 and 4-year-olds.

Our Middle and Senior students really enjoy this program and should be commended for giving up their lunch breaks each week.

“I enjoy reading to the little kids and making them feel happy because they have a student instead of a teacher reading to them. I think this makes them realise that reading can also be for younger ages. I like it when I read to them and they tell me stories that are related to the book.” Sebastian Year 7

We would also like to say a huge thank you to Ms Van Beek and her staff who welcome the older students each week and to Jessica in Year 8 for this exciting initiative which supports The UN's Goal number 4 Quality Education.

On Monday, we were pleased to welcome Martin from the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) to the school. He visited to collect donations raised by Jessica, a Year 8 student, through her various fundraising initiatives.

Martin was delighted to receive a donation of $1,640, raised from the Father’s Day Breakfast raffle and the raffle organized for Jessica at the RSL Caloundra.

These funds have been used to purchase the following Gifts of Grace through ALWS:

• One school food farm - $756
• Three "All Set for School" kits - $624
• Fifty-two "Set to Succeed" kits - $260

Jessica has demonstrated exceptional dedication in raising funds to support children in Africa. Her efforts not only provide nutritious food and educational opportunities but also raise awareness of the United Nations' Global Goal 4: Quality Education.

Pacific Lutheran College Students Qualify for Future Problem Solving 2024 National Finals

In 2024 our Middle and Senior College students have fully embraced the Future Problem Solving (FPS) program. FPS is an international educational program designed to stimulate problem-solving skills and empower students to tackle real-world challenges by analyzing complex issues and creating innovative solutions.

This year, four teams of Year 7 and 8 students completed and submitted highly competitive qualifying booklets in the Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) division. GIPS encourages students to research pressing global issues and apply the FPS six-step problem-solving process to develop solutions. The 2024 Australian topics for GIPS include Tourism, Urbanisation, and Antarctica. These thought-provoking topics prompted students to explore the environmental, social, and economic impacts of tourism growth, urban expansion, and the protection of Antarctica’s fragile ecosystem.  Individual participants from Years 9, 10, and 11 also competed in the GIPS division, engaging with these complex global themes.

Year 7 and Year 8 Pacific Plus students worked on Community Problem Solving (CmPS) projects. CmPS is designed to empower students to identify real-world problems in their local community and develop practical solutions to address them. These projects encourage leadership, teamwork, and project management skills. In 2024, our CmPS projects focused on sustainability, environmental conservation, and social inclusion, enabling students to make a direct, positive impact on their school and community.

Several Year 7 students also participated in Scenario Writing and Scenario Performance divisions. In Scenario Writing, students created futuristic stories inspired by the FPS topics, exploring possible future outcomes based on current trends. Meanwhile, in Scenario Performance, students developed and performed original pieces around FPS themes, refining their creativity, storytelling, and public speaking skills.

Celebrating our Volunteers in the Library.

We have had the good fortune to have students complete the service component of their Duke of Edinburgh badge as well as wonderful volunteers using their own time, in the library. We would be lost without them in their duties as they return books, assist in running the VR sessions, shelve books and magazines and generally complete any tasks that help the library run so smoothly.

Year 4-6 Gala Day

Last Thursday, students in Years 4 – 6 had the opportunity to play at the Term Three Gala Day in various sports. Lots of happy students arrived back in the afternoon after enjoying the opportunity to put their skills and teamwork they had developed over the term into practice.

It was pleasing to hear so many excellent results from the day with a large number of teams either winning or being named runners up in their division. Feedback from teachers and coaches was that PLC teams had represented the College very well on the day, with exceptional manners and sportsmanship on display.

Congratulations to the following PLC teams who were either runners up or champions of their division at the end of the day.

Students in teams who finished as Gala Day Champions for their division will be presented with pennants early next term.

Rugby Finals:

Last night, we had two PLC teams compete in the SCSSRU finals at Maroochydore. Our U14 Gold team kicked off the night, unfortunately going down to Grammar in the Division 2 Semi-Final. The girls have done a fantastic job improving their skills across the season and should be proud of their efforts and sportsmanship.

Our U14 Blue team had the opportunity to compete in the Division 1 Semi-Final against Siena Catholic College. The girls displayed an incredible defensive effort, keeping the opposition in their own half for the majority of the game and coming away with a convincing win of 27-5! The girls had then had the opportunity to play Flinders in the Division 1 Grand Final, a first for any PLC team. The girls again left it all on the field and showed their grit and determination against a very strong opposition. Although the girls weren’t able to come away with the Grand Final win, they should be incredibly proud of the way they represented PLC Rugby, an incredible effort.

I extend my thanks to coach, Jack Packer and am grateful for the constant support of our parents. I look forward to continuing to work with both groups of girls as they continue to grow their confidence and skill in the game.

Basketball:

Congratulations to our Senior Boys 2nds Team for winning their division grand final on Friday! The boys played exceptionally well and pushed through a tight few quarters before running away with the game. A well deserved win for the players and coach Mr Hauser.

In other basketball news, we wish our Senior CBSQ Boys and Girls all the best in their competition over the next 4 days. A big thank you to Mr Burdon and the tremendous efforts he has put into the basketball program this year.

A quick reminder that there are still basketball fixtures this week so please make sure you check Clipboard and advise Mr West or Mr Burdon prior to Friday if players are unable to attend.

Currimundi Schools’ Aquathlon:

Well done to our small group of athletes who competed at the 2024 Currimundi Schools’ Aquathlon last week. This partial Triathlon run by AUS Triathlon was a great challenge for students to push themselves against competitors from other schools. Our PLC Athletes did themselves proud with many of our students finishing in the top 5 in their age groups. We are looking forward to being a part of this competition as it continues to grow in 2025 and beyond.

Competitive Netball Trials:

In Term 4, Michelle Dufty and Ash Ervine will be running trials for our 2025 Netball Season. We are looking forward to seeing all keen netball players attend these trials in order to help us prepare for next year.

Congratulations PLC Mavericks and PLC Fireballs on winning their grand final matches last Saturday!!

In an electrifying Division 1 Grand Final, Fireballs emerged victorious with a nail-biting 44 to 40 win, navigating a game where the lead shifted multiple times. The intense back-and-forth highlighted their exceptional adaptability and strategic prowess as they responded dynamically to their opponents' challenges. Each player demonstrated remarkable composure and skill, crucial in maintaining their edge during critical moments. This high stakes victory not only underscores their resilience and tactical acumen but also celebrates their ability to perform under pressure. The win is a testament to their unwavering determination and cohesive team effort throughout the exhilarating match.

In their thrilling Division 4 Grand Final, Mavericks secured a remarkable victory with a score of 36 to 32. The match was a true testament to their hard work, with each player’s contribution instrumental in overcoming their opponents. This triumph not only marks a significant achievement for the team but also reflects the dedication and resilience that propelled them to success. Their Grand Final win is a proud moment and a well-deserved celebration of their collective effort and sporting excellence.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the end-of-season presentation and making it such a memorable occasion. Your presence and enthusiasm enriched the celebration, allowing us to celebrate our achievements and reflect on a remarkable year together. Whether you contributed on the court, supported from the sidelines, guided from the sidelines, or ensured everything ran smoothly behind the scenes, your involvement was crucial to our success. We deeply appreciate the time and dedication from our players, supporters, coaches, managers, and committee members. It was wonderful to share this special moment with such a supportive and passionate group. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey and for making the event a highlight of our season!

Weekly worship services are held at 14 Bombala Terrace Caloundra at 9.00am. We are thankful that we can meet together each week for worship. As we do this, there are still physical distancing, and hygiene requirements we need to follow to ensure the health and safety of everyone in our community.

Our worship services are intergenerational with a blend of traditional and contemporary.
